Simplify your house, life and mind

Decluttering has been overhyped, especially by those who think a 3 minute video will change their lives. That does not mean it does not help. Here’s how it helps, and how to get started.

Why Decluttering Is Good for You

The Practical Perks

  • Easier to Find Things: Say goodbye to hunting for your keys or that one shoe! A tidy home makes it so much easier to locate what you need.
  • More Space: By letting go of things you don’t need, you’ll create room for what truly matters—whether it’s new furniture, a hobby area, or just some breathing space.
  • Less Cleaning: Fewer items mean fewer things to dust, wipe, and organise. It’s a win-win!

The Mental Boost

  • Reduced Stress: Clutter can make your mind feel as messy as your home. A tidy environment helps create a sense of calm and control.
  • Increased Focus: When you’re not distracted by piles of stuff, it’s easier to concentrate on what really matters.
  • Feel-Good Factor: There’s something undeniably satisfying about seeing a clean, organised space. It’s like hitting the refresh button on your life!

Five Tips to Get You Started

  1. Start Small
Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to tackle the whole house in one go. Begin with one drawer, one shelf, or one corner of a room. Small wins build momentum.
  2. Sort Into Categories
Be honest with yourself—if you haven’t used it in a year, do you really need it? If not, it goes into one of three piles: Keep, Donate, and Dump.
  3. Use the “One-Year Rule”
Ask yourself: Have I used this in the past year? If the answer’s no, it’s time to let it go. Seasonal items can be an exception, but don’t let nostalgia or FOMO cloud your judgement.
  4. Make It Fun
Put on your favourite playlist or podcast to keep the energy up while you declutter. Better yet, involve friends or family—they can help and hold you accountable.
  5. Think About the Future
Once you’ve decluttered, focus on keeping things that way. Adopt a “one in, one out” rule: for every new item you bring home, get rid of one you no longer need.
